DIY Projects

I’m a big on DIY projects I make so many things myself and I want to start sharing those things with you. Before the post starts I want to share that I’ll be doing a Healthy Hair Challenge starting April 1st please click the link to learn more.

So I’m big on wearing my hair out and I would love to have more headbands for days when it’s not looking its best but some headbands aren’t sturdy enough for my hair or they’re too expensive either way I seem to be out of luck. I came across this video yesterday for DIY WIre Headbands and Bun Wire, vlogger Naptural 85 shows three methods of making headbands and bun wires without having to sew anything.

I’ve been making my own mud wash for about a year now and I always mix it up in a bowl. I’d been having such a hard time making it more like a thick liquid until I watched DIY Homemade Clay Hair Cleanser Shampoo Recipe. I used Rhassoul clay and Bentonite clay, lavender and Jasmine instead of ylang ylang, I have my own nettle oil that I’ve made, and sunflower seed oil instead of linden flower oil. I used it last night and my hair responded well to it and my twist out was still amazing.

What DIY projects do you want to see next Monday? Are you willing to try either of these?

All Natural Deodorant

Last night when I arrived home my arrowroot powder was waiting for me. It was the final piece of my puzzle. I could finally try my hand at making my own deodorant. I had no worries about it working or about me not liking the finished product. I had tried my hand at deodorant before and although I didn’t like it my first go round this time I was equipped with knowledge, ingredients, and recipes. So I started to gather my things when I realized something. I had every single last thing I needed except for baking soda. As many recipes as I had I was so hurt to realize they all used baking soda.

I was still determined to make my deodorant (more now than ever since I had thrown my old one out). I searched every corner of the internet until I stumbled upon this recipe for an All Natural Deodorant . It was a life saver. The recipe called for bentonite clay  which I didn’t have so I used arrowroot powder, it also uses tea tree oil and I used peppermint and lavender (it smells so good). I did mess with this one a little so here is what I used.

1.5 tbs of beeswax

3 tbs of shea butter

2 tbs of cocoa butter

4 tbs of arrowroot powder

10 drops of lavender essential oil

10 drops of peppermint essential oil

* You can use any essential oil really and the butters can be played around with as well. The recipe called for 4 tbs pf shea and 1 of cocoa butter but I wanted a little more cocoa butter. It’s up to you and your skin.

Ingredients

The deodorant is perfect and it smells so good. Please make some of your own you will not regret it. Commercial deodorant is full of chemicals and preservatives none of which you want to be absorbed through your skin. If you make your own deodorant you save money and you can control everything that goes into it. I hope this helps.

Coconut oil..my miracle oil

Not all oils are created equal. Some are great moisturizers, some are great sealants, and some go above and beyond oily duties. Coconut oil is an oil to be used as lotion, as a deep conditioner, cooking oil, and many more. If you need more ideas for how to use coconut oil please look at 52 uses for coconut oil and the follow up post 122 uses for coconut oil. These posts got me interested in coconut oil at the beginning of my hair journey when I thought I needed every oil I could find to use on my hair. I own a mini oil store now but when I first started out I could only afford to buy a couple oils at a time. When I first started using coconut oil I used it as a sealant. As I read more blogs and did a little more research I learned that coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft better than any other oil and the only other liquid more moisturizing than coconut oil is water. So if you have low porosity hair make coconut oil your friend.

Last month I started to use coconut oil and my skin and nails and the results were amazing. I went from nail stumps to claws in only a month. Not to mention my nails were stronger than ever and so shiny. My skin was so moisturized and always had this glow. It was amazing.

See what it does what your nails imagine what it would do for your hair.

Here are two recipes that you might want to give a try.

Easy moisturizing deep conditioner
If you have low porosity hair that’s protein sensitive this is perfect for you because it’s strengthening and moisturizing without your hair getting hard. You’ll need
4 tbs of coconut oil
2 tbs of honey
I did this earlier and my hair was so soft. If I wasn’t tucking it away in a protecting style. I’d put a picture up. Here’s the second recipe.

Whipped Mango Butter leave in
If you don’t like shea butter, are allergic to nuts, or need a lighter oil try this whipped butter recipe.
I used this recipe.
5 oz of mango butter
2 TBSP of coconut oil
1 tsp of sweet almond oil
1 tsp of castor oil
1 tsp of jojoba oil.
I also added two squirts of my oil mix (Vitamin e oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, castor oil, avocado oil and lavender)
I softened the mango butter in the microwave and then I put all the oils in and blended with a hand mixer.

I love the essie brand well this is my first time using it but it was love at first stroke. I will do the other polishes later in the week.

I took a trip to Trader Joes on Tuesday and picked up a whole liter of Sunflower oil for $3.99. Why do I need that much? Well I’ll tell you for oil pulling. Instead of using mouthwash to clean my mouth I will use the practice of oil pulling. It not only cleanses the mouth but the body as well. Pulling all the toxins from the body. I’ll let you know if this Ayurvedic practice works as well as the research says. Sunflower oil and Sesame oil as the oils that work the best. For 20 minutes after you brush your teeth and before your first meal, you swish it around in your mouth. It gets in between teeth and pulls put the toxins and replaces it with minerals that can’t get in. Here’s a link for more information on Oil Pulling.

I’ve been moisturizing my hands and nails with coconut oil everyday thanks to the HeyFranHey challenge and my nails have shown so much improvement over the past two weeks. At the end of the month I’ll show my length from the first and the end result.

As of right now I still have the Senegalese twists in but I’ll be taking them out soon and doing a couple different things with my natural hair. I will try to define my curls with a wash and go. I will do a twist out and I will try to do a bantu knot out. Also I will be starting the hairfinity vitamins and I want to share that journey as well.

I haven’t neglected my writing. I’ve been writing everyday this week but I don’t have anything to share yet. Please be  patient. I will be writing and updating more. I promise.

Thank you for reading,

Ok so my life isn’t totally ruined but lately my scalp has been going crazy. Ok maybe it’s been a while and I’ve been ignoring the signs. Anyway I knew from previous research that apple cider vinegar was my friend. I was using coconut oil on my scalp until I was able to get apple cider vinegar and I was pleased with it. So I headed to my local Trader Joes and let me just say that the place was packed. I felt like I was in a well lit club with slower music. There was almost no room to turn. Anyway I got my apple cider vinegar and also picked up some vitamin e oil for $2.99 or $3.99 now I can’t remember but either way it was a steal. I need this scalp therapy. Anyway I diluted my acv in a small spray bottle with water and sprayed my scalp. I had to be careful because I have in twists. After I rinsed and cowashed. I’ll have to update you on the progress but for the first time in a little while there is no itchiness when I go to apply my conditioner and most importantly NO FLAKES!

Prodcuts used:

Trader Joes Brand Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Coconut oil

Organix Moroccan Argan Oil and Macadamia oil conditioners (love these)

One spray bottle filled with diluted apple cider vinegar

One spray bottle of water with a little of both Organix conditioners. I spray my twists in the morning and at night with this mixture to keep them moisturized since my hair gets super dry and it is difficult to keep it moisturized.

If dandruff irritates your scalp as well try this and let me know how it turns out for you.

Beginning of a journey

My first twist out as a natural

I cut most of my hair off on Saturday. I wasn’t planning on doing it, it just happened. The first two days I had my hair in twists because I was in shock. I had really cut off all my relaxed ends revealing my curls, yes curls all this time I though my hair was a different texture because the relaxer was weighing it down. Here is my transition from uncomfortable to happy with my decision. It hasn’t been a week yet but already I’m happy I did what I did and I’m happy. It’s my hair and I need it healthy.

ready to cry when I finished.

but I can still do the goddess twist 🙂

Pretty happy once it was all short after I cried lol

A couple days later
