How To Add Veggies and Fruit Into Your Diet

In less than a week the Healthy Hair Challenge for April will start rules are here. One of the challenges is to consume raw fruits and veggies at least three times a week. I’ve received a few questions from you on the matter. A lot of you don’t know how to add raw fruit and veggies into your diet because you’re busy or  you don’t have a blender. Here are a couple of ways to get you started.

  1. Start with salads. You can buy them bagged or make them yourself. They can be your full meal or you can add them on the side. I bought some spring mix and I add a handful to my lunch while I’m at work.
  2. If you don’t have a blender or a juicer and you want juices or smoothies. You can try buying raw juices and smoothies they have in the supermarket. Right now I have Bolthouse brand Juiced Greens, Green Goodness, and Berry Boost. I mix the Juiced Greens with Berry Boost or Green Goodness and that’s my smoothie for the day. I prefer to make my own but I haven’t been able to shop.
  3. You can add fruit to your yogurt or ice cream. You can have carrots as a snack. There are so many small changes you can make.
  4. When you go food shopping buy your fruits and veggies in bulk so you can make salads, smoothies, juices, and snacks.

My Healthy Hair Regimen

I know this was promised so many times but here it is.

Daily
Spritz my hair  with water mixed with my oil mix and seal with coconut oil. I do this when styling my hair in the morning and when putting my hair up at night. I use aloe vera gel on my edges for a little hold and moisture.

Weekly
Deep condition (coconut honey mask or hot oil treatment).
Cowash with Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle conditioner.
When styling I use a shea and mango butter based leave in that I make myself.

Monthly
To cleanse my scalp I make a clay mask for my hair. After I wash the mask from my hair I rinse with apple cider vinegar and water (3 parts water and 1 part apple cider vinegar) and then I condition with Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle. If my scalp is flaky, itchy, or there’s more build up than usual I use a baking soda rinse instead of the mud wash (1 part baking soda and 2 parts water) and afterwards I still rinse with apple cider vinegar and condition.

**If I run out of Trader Joe’s conditioner and I need to cowash my hair. I’ll substitute by using suave. I mix Suave’s Sleek and Shine with olive oil and castor oil. I also add peppermint oil, tea tree oil, and eucalyptus oil to it as well and that holds me over until I can make it to Trader Joe’s.

I have a new process for cowashing that makes my wash process so easy, my hair is so moisturized and soft, and best of all I am now finger detangling and using the comb less. I have a lot of hair. A LOT!!!!!

Oily October Day 17

It’s Day 17 of Oily October! How’s it been so far? I’m always on the go because I’m a full time student and I also work. When I get home at night I’m exhausted and as much as I want to just crawl in the bed I know I’ll have a harder time in the morning if I do. My nightly routine is so simple that I can do it in my sleep (I think I have a couple times).

Demetra’s Nightly Hair Routine:
 – Spray hair with water and seal with oil of your choice (or aloe vera juice).
 – Twist hair into a bun (if your hair is shorter do multiple buns this keeps hair stretched).
 – Secure your bun with a hair tie and put on your satin scarf or bonnet (if you’re me you wear both).

Routine so easy a sleepy deprived person can do it and it’s fast. What oils are you using and how?

Oily October Challenge

I need some motivation. It’s Autumn the air is cool and the meals are warm. I have not been the best when it comes to drinking water, eating right, and even keeping up with my hair. The semester has so busy I forget to eat, I barely sleep, and my poor hair is suffering.

So I decided to come up with a way to make sure I keep my beautiful hair moisturized as the weather tries to dry it out.

It’ll be pretty easy. For the month of October you must follow the rules below.

1. Pick your two favorite oils. You must use the oils at least three times a week (Deep conditioner, hot oil treatment, sealing in moisture) in any way. Here’s a video on the oil mix that I use Hair and Body Oil Mix. I also add essential oils and coconut oil to mine.

2. You must drink at LEAST 1 liter of water daily (nonnegotiable and no cheating)

Big Chop Story with UntouchMyHair

My first year as a natural came and went on September 8th. Here are my posts right after I took the plunge and just a year later I have a beautiful head of hair, it was scary at first but it was so rewarding. Look out for a post about my regimen, I was hoping to vlog my regimen but as of right now I’ll be blogging.
I celebrated my BC but my hair is in twists so I can’t show how much my hair has grown over the year. I asked Lauren of UntouchMyHair to tell me about her experience.

How did you feel about your hair and yourself before your big chop? After?
I was really attached to it. I’d always been natural before, and tried lots of different styles and a few colors. Then I relaxed it and I liked it, but I missed my real hair. Even though I could still do afros even with a relaxer, it just didn’t feel right. It wasn’t as fun. Out of all the styles I’ve tried, bald was never one of them. I didn’t want to transition; I like to do things all the way instantly. I went into my bathroom with scissors and my clippers and cut it off myself. Once i started I knew I couldn’t change my mind. After I finished, I felt excited, amazed, and nervous. I thought everyone was gonna say that i looked bad or ugly, but it was the complete opposite. My confidence boosted a lot from that experience. I ended up maintaining it short for over a year, and I’d have no problem doing it again. It was a really great experience and a good lesson.
How did you care for your hair hair when you were relaxed? As a natural?
My hair care wasn’t really different actually. I still used olive oil, still deep conditioned, etc. but I wasn’t doing protein treatments, because I believed the ‘protein sensitive’ myth. I was having to ‘texlax’ every few weeks because my hair was growing fast, and my hair dries fast so I was having to be almost obsessed with my hair to make sure it stayed moisturized and retained growth. Especially since I kept it straight. Now that I’m natural, I don’t have to worry as much because I know I can put a creamy moisturizer in and not worry about my hair curling up. I use more oils, more thicker creams, and have fun making my own products. My hair care days are still every week, but it’s not as much work because I know i can braid my hair in the end and be okay. 
 
How long has it been since you big chop? Were the people closest to you supportive of your decision? What about now?
I big chopped Dec 26, 2011, so in a few months it’ll be 3 years since I big chopped. I think they were supportive. Nobody discouraged me from doing it, but nobody was standing outside the door waiting to see either. After it was done, they were amazed and liked it a lot. They thought it suited me well. As time goes by, they’ve (my mom and sisters) have had a growing interest in hair care. We’ve all had our time with relaxers, but for most of our lives, we’ve been natural. From me sharing my recipes and experiments, they’ve all become more curious of what natural ingredients and products will work for their hair. So besides our friends, we all have an immediate support system.
If you are thinking about, just went, or are about to go natural, there is always a support system near you. It may not be family, unfortunately, but you don’t have to feel ashamed, or frustrated about anything. People are always willing to help you, and share their mistakes and discoveries.

The CurlyFro

So last week I did a mud wash on my hair. I needed my hair to be extra moisturized and soft because I was going to attempt this CurlyFro tutorial by Naptural85. After my mud wash I didn’t need to add any products and I followed all the steps in the video. I let my hair dry for almost two days. It was dry after one day but I wanted to be sure.

So here’s how it turned out…

After two days I wanted more length so I parted my hair down the middle, sprayed each half of my hair with water and put them in a bun. One bun on each side. Here’s how it came out…

…As I was writing this post my hair was drying. I used baking soda on it for the first time to remove build up. It worked so well so I will be adding it to my regimen. I’ll be posting my regimen soon to show how I went from barely neck length to armpit length.

Dry Hair Problems?

We all have problems with our hair whether it’s relaxed or natural. The most common problem I’ve been dealing with and people have asked me about it dryness. There’s not one solution that will work for every head of hair. It’s all about trial and error, what works for someone else might not work for you. I will never be able to go to bed or leave the house without spraying with water and sealing daily but some lucky people out there can go days without adding moisture. If you haven’t found a way to keep your hair moisturized maybe these tips will help.

1. Drink your water.  You should be drinking half your body weight everyday. If you don’t like the taste of water you can add fresh fruit and herbs to add a little flavor and some vitamins.

*You can add whatever fruit and/or herbs that you like. I like lemon and lime.
2. You should deep condition once a week or twice a month to add moisture and to strengthen your hair. If your hair is protein sensitive coconut oil is a great alternative to a protein treatment it’ll strengthen and moisturize without making your hair hard. Switch it up a little.

3. Moisturize and Seal vs LOC method. When it comes to moisture retention there are two different methods I’ve tried and that I hear about a lot. Moisturize and Seal is just moisturizing your hair with water or a leave in conditioner and sealing the moisture in with an oil. The LOC method is helpful if your hair is really dry and you have trouble keeping it moisturized. L is for liquid and it’s usually water, O is for oil, and C is crème as in a leave in. So you spray your hair with water, seal with an oil of your choice and add a leave in on top for added moisture.

Not all oils are created equal. Some oils can penetrate your hair shaft and moisturize your hair and they are coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil.

Keep in mind these are just suggestions if you have a routine that works to it stick with it. If you’re having problems with dry hair I hope this helps. If it does help let me know and if it doesn’t help let me know. Everyone’s hair is different and what works for me might not work for you.
